Some places are immortalised in popular thought because a battle was fought there, or a treaty signed, or a great building erected. Montrose is perhaps an exception in that although it is famous all over the world, few will connect it with any particular contribution to Scotland's story. Yet, for centuries one of the most important burghs in the Kingdom, Montrose's historical significance is considerable.
Moreover, at the heart of each change and turn was the parish church. In ways that today's society would find hard to comprehend, religious life and town life intertwined at every level.
This publication, then, is greatly to be welcomed. Its authors have commemorated the bi-centenary of the erection of the present church by opening up a part of Scottish history that has much to teach - and, as will now be seen, much to entertain!
